Dec. 23rd - Army Pvt. Bernard L. Brawdy, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo C. Brawdy of Russell, participated with other personnel from the U.S. Army's Berlin Command in making Christmas happier for hundreds of orphaned youngsters in the West Berlin area. Bernard was a 1951 graduate of Chariton High School.
Dec. 16th - a sealed rail car containing thousands of letters and packages, bound for Calif,. and foreign ports west, burned at Russell. The car was part of a C.B.&Q. mail train headed for San Francisco. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
Dec. 30th - Extensive remodeling was underway at the Russell Post Office. Work included a new brick and glass front, new flooring, lighting, ceilings and a covered loading ramp.
