Years and Years Ago

10 years ago - David Rogers took over as superintendent of Russell Schools replacing the position from Bob McCurdy.

50 years ago - Douglas Dickinson and Dieter Homedale received their Eagle Scout badges during ceremonies held in Russell.  Governor Herschel Loveless was the guest speaker.  Their scoutmaster was Leonard Dickinson.

     Cody Jaclynn McCullough was born December 30 at Lucas County Health Center to parents, Kurt and Toni McCullough of Chariton.  She weighed five pounds two ounces and was 18 inches long.
     She is welcomed home by Kelsey, Max, Bobbi Jo, Emmit and Mila.
     Grandparents are Gregg and Vickey Dale of Chariton and Kevin and Cindi McCullough of Russell.

Van Allen Math Night

Van Allen staff holds math night for students.  On Thursday, Jan. 6, the staff provided its students with a night filled with mathematics fun.  Teachers had stations for students and parents to work on fun math activities.  Every 15 minutes, prizes were handed out to students who were participating.  Everyone who attended had a great time working together and learning that math is everywhere in our world.

Farm Bureau News

 Members meet with McKinley and Arnold

The Lucas County Farm Bureau Legislative Committee consisting of Earl Comstock, chr. Jim Wright, Dave Orwig, Dick Warren, Dan Harrison and Carl DeJong, along with Regional Manager Tim Prunty, met with other Farm Bureau members at the Marion County Farm Bureau office in Knoxville Wednesday, Dec. 29 for a Pre-Session meeting.

The group met with Senator Paul McKinley and Representative Richard Arnold.  Issues covered included transportation, education, funding, DNR, along with a number of other issues.

Stork News

Jason and Gayla Posch of Gardner, Kansas announce the birth of a daughter, Jordyn Ava Posch, born Dec 1.  She weighed eight pounds two ounces and was 18 inches long.  
To welcome her home is a sister, Addie Grace.
Grandparents are Alice and Bob Posch of Springhill, Kansas and David and Shari DeBok of Russell.  Great grandparents are Floyd and Helen Coulson of Russell and Charles H. and Jo DeBok of Boone, Iowa.

50 years Ago - Dec 2010

Dec. 23rd - Army Pvt. Bernard L. Brawdy, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo C. Brawdy of Russell, participated with other personnel from the U.S. Army's Berlin Command in making Christmas happier for hundreds of orphaned youngsters in the West Berlin area.  Bernard was a 1951 graduate of Chariton High School.
Dec. 16th -  a sealed rail car containing thousands of letters and packages, bound for Calif,. and foreign ports west, burned at Russell.  The car was part of a C.B.&Q. mail train headed for San Francisco.  The cause of the fire was undetermined. 
Dec. 30th - Extensive remodeling was underway at the Russell Post Office.  Work included a new brick and glass front, new flooring, lighting, ceilings and a covered loading ramp.

Harry and Glendoris Tanner Celebrate 70th Anniversary




Dec. 24, 2010 Harry and Glendoris celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.  Their family honored them with a card shower.  Cards were sent to 515 W. Northumberland, Russell, Iowa 50238.
