Lindsey Jean Mackin to Wed R. J. Gruwell

Paula Chandler-Morris, of Chariton, announced the engagement of her daughter, Lindsey Mackin to R. J. Gruwell, of Ottumwa, now residing in Russell.  

Miss Mackin graduated from Chariton High School in 2004 and is currently pursuing her associates degree as a paralegal through Everest University.  Mr. Gruwell, son of Tootie Clark-Shafer and Raymond Gruwell, of Ottumwa, graduated from Chariton High School in 2005 and has been employed by Lakeview Golf and Country Club for the past five years.  The couple will be married on July 1, 2012.

Miss Susie Relph left for San Francisco, Calif., where she attended the National Education Association convention.  Miss Relph, a teacher of rural school, Benton No. 1, was acting as a delegate for the Lucas County Rural Teachers.

After an auction and ice cream social, Russell netted over $1,100 towards their new community building.  The drive reached $18,000 and their goal was $35,000.

Summer Mumford was crowned Lucas County Fair queen.

The Russell Lady Trojan softball team members Jennifer DeHoedt and Haylee Orman were named second team all-conference players in the Bluegrass conference.  Casandra DeHoedt and Piper Orman were selected all-conference honorable mention.

50 years ago-----------

Work started on the new classroom and gymnasium addition to Russell High School.  The $163,000 structure, built by the Abild Company of Des Moines, would house six classrooms and the gym.

70 years ago-----------

Harry L. Latham and Emma Everett were working hard in six gardens in Russell where food for the school lunches were being grown for the next winter.

Commemorative Pedal Police Car Raffle

This year a 2011 Fourth of July Commemorative Pedal Police Car is being raffled off at the Fourth of July celebration.  The car was assembled and donated by John Hampton of John's Auto Body and Bruce Smith of Smith Body Shop in Chariton.

The pedal police car is one of a kind and commemorates the new Lucas County Law Center.  It's a retro style, black and white colored car with economical milk and cookie powered two-stroke motor, white wall tires and a chrome steering wheel.

Additional details include dual mirrors, door handles, a flashing red light and handcuffs.  Bingham Signs did the airbrush detailing and Hy-Vee Distribution Center provided the decals.

Last year, Hampton and Smith made a commemorative pedal fire engine that was raffled off at the Fourth of July celebration.  The woman who won it donated it back to the Fourth of July Committee and it was sold at this year's Fourth of July auction.

40 Years Ago

Bob Cain, present sophomore coach, was named head basketball coach b the Board of Education.  Cain, a former Chriton High School star, held a BA degree from Drake University.  He was head coach at Russell from 1962-65.

10 Years Ago

The United States Achievement Academy announced that Haylee Orman, of Russell, had been named an All-American Scholar.  Haylee is the daughter of Roger and Janet Orman of Russell.

20 years Ago

Ken Mason and Travis Masters, of Russell, earned spots to compete in the National High School Championship Rodeo in Shawnee, Okla.  Mason won state champion honors in bareback bronc riding and placed fourth in saddle bronc riding.  Masters finished third in the saddle bronc riding category at the state competition.

Memorial Dedication for Dwaine Clanin

There was a memorial dedication in honor of Dwaine Clanin at the start of the Cinder Path in Chariton on Sunday June 26 at 2pm.  Through Dwaine's dedication and hard work the abandoned Burlington Northern Railroad right-of-way became the first rails to trails in the state.  Friends and family unveiled a beautiful monument in his honor.

Kenton Oscar Sandy was born, May 5 2011, to Tanner and Jody Sandy, Chariton.  He was born at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.  He weighed seven pounds 13 ounces and was 20 inches long.  Welcoming him home was sister, Kendal.  Grandparents are Kevin and Debbie Kent, Lucas and Jim and Beth Sandy, Seymour.  Great-grandparents are Keith and Shirley Kent, Lucas, Deloris and the late Dale Werts, Russell.  Mary and the late Max Sandy, Chariton and Beverly and the late Frank Watsabaugh, Chariton.

Veterans Remembered

Memorial Day brings thoughts of the many brave men who gave their lives fighting for our country.  I never knew Lyle Shelton was recognized for gallantry during the time he served in Korea.  Private Shelton, son of Emmit and Ethel Shelton, attended Russell High School prior to entering the Army.  He died November 27, 1950 in Korea.  

Private First Class Lyle R. Shelton was awarded the Silver Star Medal for "Gallantry in action against an armed enemy on November 26, 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-Dong, Korea" while a member of Company "G" 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.  The citation accompanying the medal stated that Company "G" had launched an assault against an enemy-held hill and had succeeded in reaching a position 30 feet from the crest.

At this point, the enemy subjected the assault elements with intense weapons and grenade fire.  With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Shelton, a rifleman voluntarily advanced to a position from where he could engage the well-entrenched with rifle fire.  While moving forward he was seriously wounded but nevertheless continued his fearless advance.  From a vulnerable position, he laid such a devastating base of fire on the hostile entrenchments that the enemy was pinned down, thereby enabling his squad to flank and destroy the enemy.

Only when the enemy had been annihilated did he allow himself to be evacuated.

"The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Shelton reflects great credit to himself and the Armed Forces of the United States."

Recognition to Community Members

The Russell Community thanks Glenn and Justine Abrahamson for their many years of community service and wish them well in their new home in Corydon.  They will be missed in the community.

20 years ago - May 5, 1991 - Jeremy Blue, son of Danny and Wendy Blue of Russell, was selected by the Russell Legion Post 308 to attend Boys State at Camp Dodge.

40 years ago - May 5, 1971 - For the first time in  79 years, adults in Russell could legally walk the streets after 11pm.  Russell's old curfew "blue law" was thrown out the window and replaced with another curfew ordinance.  The "blue law" curfew ordinance had been passed by the city council in 1892.

30 years ago - May 19, 1980 - Members of the Russell Lions Club welcomed the Russell laundromat.  The business was owned by Wayne Riggs.

Sorority Celebrates 80th Anniversary

Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters celebrated the 80th anniversary of its founding.  Seventy Lucas County sorority sisters attended Beta Sigma Phi Founder's Day celebration at the Russell Community Center.

Skits were enjoyed announcing sorority Girl of the Year honors.  Also the newly elected Lucas County Beta Sigma Phi Area Council officers were installed into their office.

50 Years Ago April 28 1961 - It was three years and $675,000 since Lucas County residents attended a promotion dinner at the high school gym concerning a finance appeal for the Lucas County Memorial Hospital.  Monday at 7am, the hospital was open to admit its first patient.  But, Sunday there was an open house.  Applications by 18 physicians to practice were approved by the hospital Board of Trustees.  Local Doctors were Dr. Dean Curtis, Dr. J.G. Garton, Dr. R.C. Gutch, Dr. L.C. Hermann, Dr. James Egly, Dr. Lazear Throckmorton, Dr. Dwight Jarvis, Dr. Robert E. Anderson and Dr. Albert L.Yocom.  Administrator of the hospital was Robert Sherman.

Russell Native Joins Grinnell Regional Medical Center

Ronald "Pete" Collins, Jr., MD, will join Grinnell Regional Medical Center and the GRMC Medical Staff on April 25.  Collins specializes in internal medicine and will provide inpatient care as a hospitalist at GRMC initially.  Dr. Collins grew up in Russell, the son of Ron and Sandi Collins.

A hospitalist is a physician who provides care to individuals upon admission to the hospital, including the intensive care unit.  Doctors of internal medicine focus on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases.  At least three of their seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that affect adults.  Because their patients are often seriously ill or require complex investigations, internists do much of their work in hospitals and then follow up care in an outpatient clinic.

Dr. Collins comes to Grinnell after serving as a hospitalist at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.  He completed his residency at the same hospital, with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in the Peoria program.  While there, he also served as an Associate Professor of Medicine.  He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine.

"I wanted to get into internal medicine for the diversity in patient base and illnesses.  I really like the spectrum of cases."  Collins says.  "Areas that I especially enjoy are pre-operative care - that being prior to a surgical procedure - as well as diabetes and cardiac care."

"Dr. Collins brings excellent experience and skills.  With his rural upbringing, he will relate well with our patients," says Christine Lindgren, DO, PhD, internal medicine physician at GRMC.  "I'm looking forward to having Dr. Collins join us at GRMC.  He understands rural values and our patients will connect well to him."

Prior to attending medical school, Collins was a paramedic for both Delta and Medic Ambulance companies in Maine.  He earned an undergraduate degree from Norwich University Military College of Vermont.  He also served six years in the United States Army Reserves as a combat medic.

Dr. Collins and his wife Jennifer have two children Victoria, 15 and Broden, 3.

Congratulations Lucas County Health Center for 50 years of Service

The April 26, 2011 Chariton Leader Newspaper had a large article about the 50 year anniversary of the Lucas County Health Center with pictures.  Pictures showed the inside of the new health center with its modern state-of-the-art nurses station, lobby, patient rooms, new-born incubators; original hospital board of trustees, officers of the Memorial Hospital Foundation, hospital supporters and the present day staff.  There were several articles about patients and the wonderful care they have received through the years from the doctors and the staff at this modern day medical facility. 

The first baby (girl) born in this facility was delivered by Dr. Loren Hermann to Mrs. Raymond Nelson.  She was the 8th child for the Nelson family.  To the Nelsons went an array of gifts sponsored by Chariton and area merchants.  More than 60 merchants participated in the "First Baby Contest" and the gifts ranged from discounts on home appliances to supplies of baby foods, formula, baby blankets and other articles.  In addition to the first baby gifts, a six-months supply of baby food and a $5 gift was given the second child born at the new hospital.  An example of the fine equipment available for the care of the new-born was this nursery incubator, one of two in the hospital.  A second  became available later in the surgical suite.

In the picture to the left, officers of the Memorial Hospital Foundation inspected the contributor's book.  Simple memorial plaques provided a background.  Left to right are: John Woodman of Russell, 1st Vice-president, H.V. Levis, President, F.B. Ryan, 2nd Vice-president, John D. Baldridge, Secretary-Treasurer, all of Chariton.  The Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to give financial support to the hospital.  Annual meetings, election of officers and financial needs will be its continuing purpose.

Members of the memorial hospital Board of Trustees, pictured to the right, met in the dining-meeting room in the basement of the hospital and they managed construction and equipping of the 35 bed unit.  Clockwise at the table, beginning at the front left, are Fred Curtis, Walter Coop, of Russell, chairman Delbert James, secretary Oliver Kent, Oran Garrett, Lloyd Cottingham and Troy Irving.  On the original board, in addition to James, Curtis, Kent and Garett, were Dean Ferguson, Earl Wright and Arthur Keller.

Kaylyn Clarissa Peterson was born on April 12 at Mercy Medical Center to Justin and Tara Peterson of Chariton.  She weighed six pounds 11 ounces and was 20 inches long.  Grandparents are Ken and Judy Mumford and Joyce Schumann all of Russell.

Appreciates Local Firemen

My wife and I would like to thank the firemen from Russell and Chariton for their help with our fire.  We don't have words to thank you for your quick response, tireless work and bravery fighting the fire here.

I couldn't believe they got it out the first time with no more damage than there was.  I thought, just as they did, that it was completely out when they left.  When it restarted between 3 and 4 a.m. we weren't so lucky as all they could do was contain it.

Local people do not realize how good our firefighters are until they watch them work.  They are as good as professionals and still hold regular jobs.  Thankfully none of them were hurt.  Thanks again.  We won't forget your help.   Two very lucky Chariton residents.
